Rising Food Prices are Harming American Families

8:46 AM Posted by Cascia

I watch the news every day and one story that has caught my attention this week is the high cost of food. Big box stores such as Costco and Sam's Club are rationing their rice due to this price increase. Apparently world hunger is also on the rise and there is not enough rice to go around.

Jennifer Maiser from Bay Area Bites explains what is causing this increase in food prices,

"Worldwide high prices are coming from a zeitgeist of factors:
Oil and energy costs are rising.
Climate changes such as droughts affect crops.
Farmers are moving their crops from food to potentially more lucrative biofuel crops.
As citizens of countries such as China and India become more successful, their diets are changing and they are buying more food. They are eating more meat, which requires a much larger amount of grains. "

I am responsible for the grocery shopping in my family. Because our income is near the poverty line but we do not have government assistance for food I can only afford the basics for my family. Our grocery list consists of, bread, cereal (only if it is $2.00 or less a box), milk, eggs, ground beef, hamburger helper, and canned fruits and vegetables. I am not able to afford to feed my kids the healthy foods that they need such as fresh fruits and vegetables and a wider variety of meats. My family is not the only household in the US that has to make adjustments to their budget in order to afford the grocery bill.

Michael Vail stated that, "Across the country, low-income families are struggling with rising food costs. Last year, escalating gas prices — along with the increasing cost of corn and other farming supplies — contributed to higher transportation and packaging costs. The result was a 5.8 percent increase in food prices in major cities across the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As you can see we are not the only families struggling with this slowing economy and increasing inflation. My family is planning on cutting back on trips/vacations this summer. We are also driving our cars less frequently. The family car is only used to transport my daughter to school, karate and occasionally the grocery store. We might have to resort to doing all of our errands within walking distance in order to save money. What is your family doing differently to afford your grocery bill? I welcome any comments and feedback on this topic.
