When visiting a local high school I was shocked to see such unhealthy snacks in the vending machines. With just a few dollars our children can get greasy potato chips, high sodium pretzels and sugary fattening candy bars. No wonder there is an obesity epidemic in the United States. To combat the situation Elizabeth Dehart, a mother of two from West Jordan, UT is on a mission to put healthy organic snacks in vending machines at schools across America.
She came up with the idea when her daughter started kindergarten. She didn't like what her daughter's school was serving for lunch and thought that she could make a difference. School lunch programs are serving foods high in fructose corn syrup and trans fats. A recent study shows that these additives may be linked to ADD type behavior.
Elizabeth believes that schools should provide vending machines with healthy organic foods for the children. In July she proposed this idea to the website IdeaBlob.com. They thought it was wonderful and she won their monthly contest. Since winning the contest Elizabeth has raised enough money to purchase 3 vending machines and plans on contacting wholesalers to fill the machines with healthy organic snacks.
Why is it important for our children to eat organic foods? Organic food does not contain any pesticides or artificial preservatives which can be harmful to our children.
Elizabeth plans on promoting this in Utah and then eventually every state in the US. What can we as parents do to help her? "Contact your kids school and tell them you want options for your children," she stated. "We need to do this for the health and well being of our children."
If you are in Utah and would like to help Elizabeth put organic vending machines in local schools contact Healthy Moms and we will let you know how to get a hold of her.
