Morning Sickness During Pregnancy: What to Expect and When to be Worried

Morning sickness or nausea is very common in early pregnancy. Some women can't even think about eating while others can only handle certain foods. Some women get sick right after they eat. This icky feeling in your stomach might not only occur in the morning. Some women have morning sickness only in the afternoon while others suffer from it all day.

It's okay if you can't keep much down during the early weeks of pregnancy. As long as you continue taking your prenatal vitamin you and your baby should be just fine.

Some women have nausea and vomiting that is so severe that it can lead to weight loss and loss of fluids. This condition called, hyperemesis gravidarum if not treated can put the unborn baby at risk. If you can't keep any food or liquid down, lose weight quickly, have dark, scant urine or vomit blood you could have hyperemesis gravidarum and should call your doctor right away.

Treatment of this condition is usually hospitialization along with fluids given intravenously. Your doctor may also treat you with anti-nausea medications. Most women with this condition are not allowed to eat any food until the vomiting stops.

I had "morning" sickness all day long, not great with two toddlers running around!

It's pretty awful, isn't it? I had to take my vitamins at night because even those would set my stomach off.

I had morning sickness right up until I delivered. I didn't have an easy pregnancy. I think the delivery was easier then being pregnant. LOL!! Thanks for the information.

I agree with Michelle--I thought labor/delivery was way easier than being pregnant! Morning sickness is what I fear most about getting pregnant again. . .I had THE WORST days of my life. By the way, Logan did return to sleeping through the night--but it took 4 months! So I would still be interested in what you did incase it happens again or with our next child. Thanks!

I have not delievered yet, but I have a feeling I will be agreeing with Michelle and Andrea. I have also been miserable since about 7 weeks and it has only gotten slightly better. Though now the extreme nausea has been replaced by excessive saliva/spitting.

This is a great post and wish I saw it when I had the morning sickness. I had it all day for months. I actually lost weight for awhile there when pregnant. I will just say that due to my morning sickness I cannot even look at broccoli now.

I really think they should change the name to all day sickness, because that is what I had for all three of my kids. Ugh, it makes me feel bad just thinking about it. And the only food that I could keep down was Taco Bell tacos which didn't help matters any.

Speaking as a husband and a father, it was really hard to see my wife go through this. I'd always ask what I could do, and always hear back 'Nothing, I'm fine.' But I'd still ask every time.

I had horrible morning sickness too. Tried the standard stuff, but nothing worked. The thing that worked the best for me was acupressure techniques. Look into it, it may help. Good luck!

This absolutely hits the spot. If I may add my experience with morning sickness I'd like to say I tryed most of reccomended methods and have found one which really works. It's based on acupressure. If you're interested I'd be more than happy to share my knowledge on my blog :
