IU2U.org (It's up to you) wants to help you learn more about healthy living and childhood obesity prevention. On their website they state that, "12,500,000 American children are overweight, In the last 30 years this number has tripled. By 2010, an estimated 20% of our country's children will be obese."

These statistics are scary. Your children are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and even death at a young age. Every parent wants the best for their children. We try to give them the best education possible, a nice home, and clothing. Now is the time to teach our children how to stay healthy. We should also want the best health for our children.

The IU2U.org website has lots of valuable information on childhood obesity and how you can prevent it. You can get all of your health questions answered by a celebrity, sign the Fit Kids Act, and learn from experts right on their website.

The Fit Kids Act would make it mandatory for elementary students to have 150 minutes of physical education a week, middle school and high school students would have 225 minutes of physical education each week, and schools would have to educate parents, teachers and administrators of the dangers of childhood obesity. Their goal is to have 100,000 signatures so that Washington will notice and make these necessary changes.

You can also take charge of your family's health by encouraging physical activity and outdoor play, serving healthy snacks and meals with fruit, veggies and lean protein and teaching children to make healthy choices about food and fitness.

Visit It's Up To You.org today and sign the petition. You can make a difference in the lives of millions of children.

I just wrote something similar on my site, it's national 'Get your Kids off the Couch Week!'

Thank you for the information. The statistics shocked me. I cannot believe that the number has tripled.

Parents definitely need to be aware and put this on a priority list.

When I was in school we had recess daily (outside) and gym 3 x a week. Now most kids don't get either, ever. Something totally needs to change.

Great information. Such a huge problem in our country. I'm always shocked at what other mothers feed their kids. It just seems like so much junk food to me. I had weight issues as a child, so I'm so careful when feeding my little one. Thanks so much Cascia for your sweet comments on my blog. You're a sweetie.

Very scary indeed!

In Canada the government gives you a tax credit for enrolling your children in sports, or any kind of physical activity. It is such a great incentive to get the kids out from behind the computer screen.

I'm beginning to worry that my son might just be the next obese kid on the block. He eats non-stop!!
I'm tempted to put chains on the refrigerator doors...soon

Childhood obesity is such a frightening thing. I don't really understand how it has happened. We are lucky, in our school, the kids have P.E. twice a week and outdoor recess every day (unless it is really miserable). Our school district still has overweight kids, but I think there are fewer than in other areas.

The statistics are scary. Kids don't get enough exercise. My 12 year old doensn't even take gym class at all this year at school! Which seems crazy to me.

This just makes me so sad. What has happened to us that we are allowing this to continue? Well, I am really hopeful that we as a nation start taking action now and get our buts in gear!
I heard of a school recently that has a list of foods your child cannot bring to school. The list is pretty big and it is basically anything unhealthy.
