Planning a Winter Vacation on a Budget

Each year my family takes a winter vacation out to Wisconsin to see my parents and relatives. Last year we took the kids out there for Thanksgiving and this year I am going out there with all four of my children for Christmas. My husband will be staying home to work over the holidays.

Planning a trip across the country like the one I will be taking is a lot of work and requires some financial planning first. Family vacation budgeting is not easy. I will share with you some tips to create the perfect family vacation on a budget.

  • The first thing you need to consider before going on a family vacation is how much you are willing to spend. This year we set aside some of our income tax return for our airplane tickets. We also researched to find the best deal and decided it would be more cost effective to fly out of San Francisco instead of Sacramento.
  • If you are planning on using a credit card while on vacation make sure you have a large enough balance first. If you have a difficult time paying off your credit card you might want to consider trying debt consolidation. This is the process of taking multiple debts, and combining them into one single monthly payment.
  • Avoid taking cash with you on your vacation. Carrying around large amounts of cash is risky. If something happened to your wallet or purse you would no longer have any money to spend. If you just have plastic and something happens most credit card companies will stop your account and cancel all unauthorized transactions.
Family vacations are wonderful and help reduce stress for parents and children. If you are planning a vacation this winter, plan ahead and use these tips to be certain that your vacation is both fun and affordable.

Those are some good tips! We always seem to fly out of SFO...much better deals than flying out of Sacto. Also, sometimes the San Jose airport has good deals.

We usually go to Disneyland every year in November but this year we decided to skip it and wait until next November when our little twins are old enough to really enjoy it.
