I again would like to thank everyone for participating in the prayer chain. If you are new to this you shall find what you can do to help spread the prayer chain and how you can add your prayers. I update the list every Sunday. Please help spread the prayer chain because I should be getting hundreds of new prayers every week. If you know anyone who is in need of prayers be sure to add them to the list.

If you want to pass this prayer chain along on your blog all you need to do is add the prayer chain button and blog about this once a week. Ask your readers to post their prayer intentions as comments. Then you can either e mail those intentions to me at talbertcascia at yahoo dot com or post them as a comment on my prayer chain post. You can also direct your readers to this post so they can post their prayer intentions directly to my site. If you intend to list prayers on your site please add your link so we can find those prayers.

I should have hundreds of comments from people that need prayers. I know they are out there. When you say your prayers at night, in the morning, or whenever you pray visit our chain and read the intentions. God is listening.

Here's the latest list.

"Hi Cascia. I'm the one who won the labor looks gown from your contest. Our baby was born on January 7th, and he is doing really well. But my labor and delivery did not go as planned or as we'd hoped, and I ended up with a partial 4th degree tear from an emergency forceps delivery, other wounds from 4 hours of intense pushing more than 36 hours after my water broke, and an infected abcess/hematoma in the same spot along the tear site. More than 3 weeks after my son's birth, several heavy-duty medications and 3 surgical procedures later, I am just now "out of the woods". But recovery is going to be very slow, and the emotional struggle is starting to get intense now that the physical struggles have lessened. In a week, my mom will be heading home, and I'll be on my own while my husband works. Normally, that would be okay, but with the unique issues from my complications, it is going to be hard. (I can't even sit or walk properly. And certain muscles in that area will need physiotherapy to get back to normal functioning.) Basically, I need healing of body and mind, as well as the ability to fully care for my son and somehow do household things that my husband cannot do with his schedule. (He does a ton and is the best, but his energy and time don't allow for taking care of my entire load.)

My other struggle right now is being able to see and feel all the zillions of positive and good things happening around me right now, and I seem stuck on the negative. I do see God's hand prints all over this situation, especially in the way my maternity doctor has cared for me both physically and spiritually, going above and beyond the normal role of medical physician. So there are many "Ebenezers" I see and cherish. But this journey is still hard, and sometimes finding Jesus beside me in all of this is not easy.

Thank you for praying."

Please Pray for the McCabe Family

This morning I received a text message from a nursery worker saying one of the families from our church lost there house do to a fire. The family happened to be one I have babysat for a couple of years. (Actually posted a picture of the kids a while back on here). I rode by the house minutes ago and the house is gone. Every room was destroyed, so I can image they lost everything. I feel so helpless and so heartbroken that they have to go through this. Please say a pray for them tonight and for the days ahead.

I asked my new friend, Tiffany, if I could ask you all to pray for her and the 3 miracles she's carrying! She is my neighbors' sister, lives in NC, and is expecting 2girls and 1boy! I'm pretty sure she is at 29 wks tomorrow! The last 2 wks she has been having a lot of contractions and is desperately trying to keep those babies in the oven longer! She has no cervix left so every day is a huge blessing! Please pray for her sanity, thru the ups and downs of this stage of the journey! Peace for her and her hubby. That those babies can stay in for a few more weeks! For a "non-emergency" delivery and the safe deliveries of 3 healthy babies! Thanks so much for praying! Weekend Reflection #56 - Preterm Labor, Impossible 3 Year Old, and New Outlook for the Future

Grab the Weekend Reflection Code

It's time once again to reflect on the past week. What were some of the positive things that happened? What really bothered you? Did you laugh? Cry? Stand on your head? Whatever you did this past week I want to hear it. Writing down all the crazy things that happened over the past week is a good way to deal with stress. As our lives get busier and busier along with it is stress. It is time to let it all out so you can enjoy your weekend. Grab the button code, make your blog post and don't forget to leave your link with Mr. Linky!

I can't believe I've been doing this meme for 56 weeks now!

This week went by rather quickly and I was busy like usual. I think that is how I started last week's Weekend Reflection. Anyway, it seems like there was always something going on each day. But now all the days seem like a blur so I get them all confused.

One morning Chris slept in so I had to pick Courtney up from school. I still can't remember which day that was. I had a home visit from Birth and Beyond, got a phone call from the OB clinic stating that my iron is low so now I have to take iron pills too, I've had diarrhea on and off all week along with contractions, Ciara has been impossible all week...okay now I am just listing randomly. Let me explain this all a little better.

My home visit with Birth and Beyond went pretty well. I filled out some more forms and answered a few more questions. Then she said that the county is cutting funding and several people in Birth and Beyond are going to lose their jobs. They are also going to have to shut down a few of their offices and might end all the home visits. Funding is being cut all over this state. So they made t-shirts and are going to protest downtown during the hearing regarding this issue. It is sad. She told me that their main mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect. When they closed down one center in the area it effected over 100 families and the child abuse and child death statistics for that area went up. The county also wants to cut the data entry person who tracks all that information.

I have not been feeling the greatest this week. I am always tired, can't eat much without getting diarrhea, and my contractions are getting harder and harder for me to control. Welcome to the third trimester! I always have the worst time during my third trimester. When I was pregnant with Ciara I was hospitalized for pre term labor and dehydration about three different times during the last few months, but she was still born five weeks early. With Conan, when we found out we were having a boy the doctor wanted to play it safe and he put me on bed rest when I was about 28 weeks. I remained on complete bed rest with medication to help prevent contractions until I was 36 weeks. He was born two weeks later and was considered full term. When I was pregnant with Courtney my water broke unexpectedly at 36 weeks. She was my tiniest baby and only weighed 4lbs 9 oz. We had to take her to the doctor's to get weighed every day until she was over 5lbs. So with all this diarrhea and contractions that I am having I am kind of worried about this one. Also we are having another boy but this clinic hasn't taken any precautions to prevent preterm labor unlike my old doctor. Hopefully my son will hang in there for at least 6 more weeks. Until then I will try to get more rest and drink more water. Oh, and my back is killing me because of all the contractions. And the kids did something with my heating pad! I hope I find it this weekend.

Ciara is getting harder and harder to control. I swear she is going to make me lose my mind. Yesterday I think I sent her to her room every 20 minutes. I quit counting to three with her. Now it is just, "Go to your room." The problem is she is so independent for being only 3. I know I should encourage her independence but it is getting her in trouble. For example, she likes to help herself to the refrigerator which should be fine but she helps herself to all the wrong foods! She likes to take the Smart Balance out and eat it strait out of the tub. One day she and Conan got the granola out of the pantry and had it all over the floor. She doesn't ask me for a snack anymore. Instead she just helps herself and it is either to something that isn't that good for her or she makes a big mess. She is also a little bully. Yesterday she was laying on top of her little brother and it looked like she was trying to strangle him. I have no idea why she would do this. She also has done these things to him, bit him, chased him with a stick, took toys away from him, took his blanket from him and she pushes him nearly every single day. He is a very sensitive little boy so he doesn't always stick up for himself. Instead he cries. I don't know if she is looking for that reaction or what. I am afraid that she is going to seriously hurt him one of these days. And how is she going to be around the baby?

Courtney is almost done with school. Her last day is Thursday. Yesterday the sixth grade went to our local water park, Sun Splash. She mostly stayed in the Lazy River with her friend who is not a very good swimmer. Even though there were a few water slides that Courtney would have enjoyed I am proud that she stuck with her friend. They also performed a little play for the first graders on Thursday, Pecos Bill. I remember reading the book when I was a kid. During the last week of school they are going to do some cleaning, watch a movie and have one more performance of Pecos Bill. I remember the last week of school when I was a kid. We always had fun things to do to end the school year.

Chris got a new job with Dish Network. I am so excited! The pay is about the same as what he is making now but we will finally have medical benefits and he will be working full time. Our income will remain the same, which is fine, but the benefits is what I am excited about. No more goofy MediCal! Also Dish Network is a large company with offices all over the country and they told him that after a year he can transfer anywhere in the US. Our goal is to move back to the Midwest a year from now and it looks like it will be reachable! He is also going to try really hard to prove to them how good of a worker he is. Hopefully when he transfers it will be more than just a transfer. We would like him to be able to get a promotion and a raise when we move. We'll see!

I would love to hear about your week. Join in and don't forget to leave your link with Mr. Linky. (If it is working properly today.)

Potatoes, Glycemic Index, and "White Foods" - Friend or Foe for a Lean-Body?

Posted by Cascia Talbert at Thursday, May 28, 2009

Ma.gnolia DiggIt! Del.icio.us Yahoo Furl Technorati Reddit

by Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer

I'd like to start a little discussion today about carbohydrates... and in particular, "white foods" as well as potatoes. One reason I wanted to mention this is because so many health and fitness professionals trash talk potatoes about being a bad carbohydrate choice because of the high glycemic index. Some even say such ridiculous things as "avoid any and all white carbohydrates".

Ok, now while I certainly agree that white bread and refined white sugar are two of the worst things we can be feeding our bodies, I definitely don't agree with avoiding any and all "white carbohydrates". Now I know all of the buzz lately has been about colorful foods and the protective antioxidants that they contain. They tell you to focus on colors and stay away from white.

It's true that colorful foods are great, but it is a big mistake to specifically avoid white foods! There are plenty of white foods that have specific nutrients that are hard to find elsewhere. Let's look at a few examples...

Onions & Garlic

What about onions and garlic? They are both white and they are chock full of protective phytonutrients, vitamins, and trace minerals that aren't easy to find elsewhere in a normal diet... such nutrients as allicin, quercetin (an important flavonoid), chromium, and other unique anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Cauliflower

Another example of something white that is great for you is cauliflower. Cauliflower is loaded with vitamin C, fiber, minerals, and special compounds such as glucosinolates and thiocyanates, which are specifically abundant in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. And a little-known fact is that some of the compounds in cruciferous vegetables help to combat other estrogenic compounds in our food supply and environment and can help prevent excess belly fat. So eat up on that cauliflower!

Mushrooms

Not many people realize this, but surprisingly, even white mushrooms have high levels of unique nutrients and antioxidants. White mushrooms are high in a couple types of antioxidants called polyphenols and ergothioneine.

Potatoes

Now that also leads us to another example - white potatoes (which by the way, can also be found in red, yellow, purple varieties, etc). Many health professionals claim that potatoes are a bad carbohydrate because they are thought to have a high glycemic index. First of all, if you've read my Truth about Six Pack Abs book, then you understand that glycemic index is not necessarily the most important factor in choosing your carbohydrates.

While a generalization can be made that most low glycemic index carbohydrate choices will help you lose body fat easier than high glycemic index choices, it is not all that it's cracked up to be. There are many other factors that determine how your body will react-to and process the carbohydrates you ingest, such as glycemic load and also how you combine the high GI food with other foods.

For example, using glycemic load as an example... it is known that watermelon has a high glycemic index. However, the glycemic load of a normal serving of watermelon is just way too low for your body to start packing on body fat just because you ate a high glycemic index fruit. You would have to eat such an enormous quantity of watermelon just to get enough grams of carbohydrates to have any negative glycemic effect, that it is just non-sensical.

Not to mention that watermelon is also a great source of vitamins, minerals, and lycopene. There's just no reason to avoid it simply because it has a high GI. My point is... candy bars, cupcakes, and donuts make you fat... NOT watermelons, carrots or potatoes.

Also, as i mentioned, food combinations are important in how your body processes the carbohydrates and the associated blood sugar and insulin response you receive. For example, if you mix a high glycemic index carbohydrate with an extra source of fiber, healthy fats, or even certain proteins, many times the blood sugar and glycemic response will be slowed down considerably by the way you combined the food. Again, I talk in detail about this entire topic in my Truth about Six Pack Abs book.

Alright, so back to my point that white potatoes are actually a healthy carbohydrate as long as you eat them in the right form... with the entire skin, and please don't ruin them by deep frying them into french fries either! French fries are one of the most evil things ever invented for your health, but only because we ruin them by soaking them in a scorching bath of trans fats in the deep fryer from the hydrogenated oils that are typically used.

Keep in mind that potatoes contain so many vitamins and minerals that the list is way too long to even try. Also, as long as you eat the skins, you get a decent shot of fiber too.

On the topic of potatoes not being so bad after all, I don't remember where I saw this referenced, but I recently saw a particular study that had participants eat something like 7-9 whole potatoes per day for several weeks.

At the conclusion of the study, the potato eaters had actually consistently lost weight! I'd venture a guess that the reason the people lost weight is that they were probably so full from eating all of those damn potatoes, that they actually consumed less calories than normal! An average sized potato only has about 100-120 calories, and I can surely imagine you'd be full constantly from eating 7-9 potatoes each day.

Now I would never recommend going to those extremes, but my point is that an occasional potato is not going to hurt your efforts to get lean, especially if you combine it with some other fibrous vegetables and maybe a healthy fat and some protein. On that note, I have one of my favorite recipes for you, using potatoes.

Geary's Lean-Body Potato Side Dish

* Desired quantity of baby potatoes (I like to use this mixture I found recently at a health food store... it is a mixture of white, red, yellow, and purple baby potatoes)
* 1 red pepper
* 1 green pepper
* 1 yellow pepper
* 1 or 2 onions
* a couple cloves of garlic, finely chopped
* 1 or 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
* a little salt and pepper to taste (I like using a sea salt instead of normal commercial salt)

Cut the baby potatoes into slightly smaller pieces and place in a steamer until soft all the way through. Slice up the peppers and onions into strips and add with the chopped garlic into a pan with the olive oil. Cook the peppers, onions, and garlic until tender, and then add the steamed baby potatoes. Stir it all together and serve. This is a delicious and healthy side dish that goes great with chicken or red meat.

I hope you've enjoyed this little topic today about potatoes, healthy carbohydrates, glycemic index, and my killer potato recipe idea!

Green Alternatives to Common Air Fresheners

Posted by Jennifer Nordin, LMT, CST, CAP at Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Share this post:
Ma.gnolia DiggIt! Del.icio.us Yahoo Furl Technorati Reddit

Why Should We Diffuse Essential Oils Instead of Using Those Common Air Fresheners?

Researching air freshener/plug-in ingredients from their Material Safety Data Sheets we find that these ingredients are toxic.

Let’s look at a few of the toxic chemicals in air fresheners/plug-ins:

Benzyl Alcohol - “…upper respiratory tract irritation, headaches, nausea and vomiting, a depressed central nervous system and a drop in blood pressure.”

Camphor - “On EPA's Hazardous Waste List… readily absorbed through the body tissues…irritation of eyes, skin, nose, and throat…dizziness, confusion, nausea, twitching muscles and convulsions…avoid inhalation of vapors.”

Dichlorobenzene - “extremely toxic, a central nervous system depressant, kidney and liver poison. One of the chlorinated hydrocarbons that is long-lasting in the environment and is stored in body fat. Vapor irritating to skin, eyes and throat. Banned in California.”

Ethanol-- “… derived from petroleum and is carcinogenic… toxic to the skin, respiratory, cardiovascular, developmental, endocrine, neurological, and gastrointestinal systems.”

Formaldehyde - “…toxic if inhaled, poisonous if swallowed, skin and eye irritant, carcinogenic…”

Naphthalene - “… a carcinogen that accumulates in our waters and marine life. It can be irritating to the skin, alter kidney function, cause cataracts, and is toxic (cardiovascular and developmental), especially to children. It can be poisonous if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin.

▪ Air “fresheners,” according to the Household Hazardous Waste Project, do not freshen the air at all. What they do is mask one odor with another, while diminishing one’s sense of smell with a nerve-deadening agent (Pitts, Whiff).

▪ Colorado researchers have helped figure out why mothballs and air fresheners can cause cancer - their chemicals block the natural process of "cell suicide," allowing tumors to develop (Scanlon).

The Healthy Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils

Diffused oils alter the structure of molecules that create odors, rather than just masking them. They also increase oxygen availability, produce negative ions, and release natural ozone.

Many essential oils such as lemongrass, lemon, Purification blend, Citrus Fresh blend, and Thieves blend are highly antibacterial and are extremely effective for eliminating and destroying airborne bacteria, fungus, mold, and unpleasant odors.

Research shows that cold air diffusing certain oils may also:

· Relax the body, relieve tension, and clear the mind.

Using candle diffusers and light bulb diffuser rings can burn the EOs which renders the oil therapeutically less beneficial and can even create toxic compounds. An ultrasonic cold air diffuser like the one pictured above is the best method of atomizing a microfine mist of EOs into the air, where the therapeutic molecules can remain suspended for up to several hours.

Potty Time Tuesday - Sometimes You Just Have to Let Go of Diapers

As I attempt to potty train child number three I am learning how different kids really are. Some children just don't get it or just want to take their time with the whole process. My son loves to sit on the potty but he rarely goes. He also enjoys watching his Sesame Street: Elmo's Potty TimeDVD while he is sitting on his little potty. But for some reason it doesn't matter how long he is sitting on that potty. He always goes in his pants.

I am also learning that sometimes you just have to stop using the diapers and clean up the potty accidents. I think that is the only way he is going to learn. So whenever we are home I take his diaper off and put on some cotton training pants. Now that the weather is nice I've been letting him run around in the privacy of our fenced in back yard without anything on his bottom. Is it working? Only time will tell.

So far he's had several accidents and went pee pee on the potty once. But I am going to keep trying this. Someday he will figure this potty thing out.

I believe that education is also essential for good health. Reading, writing and learning helps your mind stay sharp and young. So I am going to share with you a brief lesson on the history of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was a day of remembrance for those who died serving in the Civil War. Two dozen towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, NY as the birthplace of the holiday. Although, it might have and many separate beginnings. Each of those towns had planned or spontaneous gatherings to honor their fallen soldiers in the Civil War.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, a National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

The southern states had their own Memorial Day up until after WWI, when the holiday changed from honoring the fallen from the Civil War to honoring Americans who died serving in every war. Today nearly every state celebrates Memorial Day on the last Monday in May. Several southern states still have an additional day to honor those who died serving the Confederate during the Civil War. These states include: Texas on January 19, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi on April 26, South Carolina on May 10, South Carolina on May 10 and Louisiana and Tennessee on Jefferson Davis' Birthday on June 3.

On this Memorial Day remember our fallen heroes and those serving overseas today.
