Eating Disorders Aren't Just for Teens...

Posted by Michelle at Monday, August 31, 2009

Ma.gnolia DiggIt! Del.icio.us Yahoo Furl Technorati Reddit

I normally try to do a separate post here, but today I am copying and pasting this from my blog because I felt like it was important enough to share here...

This is really hard for me to admit, but I've suffered for years from an eating disorder. I have self diagnosed myself as a part time anorexic and a part time binge eater. My weight has always fluctuated thanks to this. For months, I will survive on barely 500 calories a day and strictly control everything I put into my mouth. I also go through periods where I will workout like a mad woman. Then, I lose control and begin to binge... or basically eat anything and everything I want. Sometimes this goes on for months. Which of course ends up in weight gain... and then I get to the point where I'm totally disgusted with myself and the anorexic cycle begins again.

I don't really make a great anorexic. I mean, I'm great at not eating, but I will NOT puke unless it's absolutely necessary. Don't worry- I've only done it a few times in my life (on purpose) and found that it's honestly not worth it. I'd much rather swallow some laxatives and simply just not eat. I know. You don't have to preach to me. This is not a healthy way to be. I get it. I really do. Do I want my girls to get this from me? Hell no. Both my older girls seem to have a healthy relationship with food thus far and both seem to love their bodies. Hell, I did too before kids (well...not really. I've pretty much always had body issues). Having a baby at 18 pretty much ruined all the good I had going on there. LOL

Actually, I can track my eating disorder beginnings to after having my first baby. I had never had a problem with weight before that, so when I gained 70 lbs during pregnancy, I just assumed it would all come off by the time I came home from the hospital. Needless to say- no such luck. I had a hard time losing any, and if that weren't enough, I got pregnant with my second child when my first was only 5 months old. After my second was born, is truly when my eating disorder began. I was desperate to lose weight at any cost. I actually remember losing about 40 lbs in one month. Do you want to know how? By not eating. Anything. Almost. Unless you count a half of a can of tuna per day for a month. Yep, that was it. And I worked out too. I swear I almost killed myself. I remember my then in laws had to come get me and the kids and take us to their house to stay for a bit because I was so weak I couldn't take care of my own kids. They had no idea why I was so weak. I just told them I must have a stomach flu. I was always good at hiding it.

My ideal weight (in my mind) would be about 100 lbs. I was happiest and thought I looked the best at that weight. But if I'm completely honest, I'm never really satisfied. I can always find issue with some part of my body. I've been as small as a girls size 14/16 and still complained about being fat. Right now, I'm at 114- so you can imagine I'm trying to lose. Over the summer I had been binging and had gained up to 123. I finally got disgusted with myself and began "eating right" again... that's what I like to call it. I've lost 9 lbs in four weeks. That's not too drastic. I'm trying to get to my "goal" by doing it a bit healthier this time, but the old demons always come back to haunt me. It's so much easier not to eat much than to try to eat all those calories you're supposed to eat and then try to burn them off.

Losing weight is addictive. I thrive on comments from others when I lose. Whenever anyone tells me, "Wow- you are so tiny!" or "you sure do lose weight quickly!" ... it just makes me want to lose more. But, if they don't say anything then I figure I must have gained or they think I'm fat and so I "punish" myself and still try to lose more. It's sad that I need that kind of acknowledgement from others. I really wish I didn't care so much. My Dad was always good at pushing me forward about the weight loss. He also cared greatly about his looks and weight and would always notice if I had lost. I don't blame him for the way I am... after all, it has been my choice to go this road over the years.

Most people who know me think I'm at a healthy weight. Thanks to my binging from time to time, I'm not the "anorexic" looking girl with her bones sticking out. So I easily hide my eating disorder from everyone. It's probably more detrimental in the long run though... because it goes unnoticed. I'm sure those of you reading this will actually be in shock if you know me in real life.

I think most of America has an eating disorder though. I mean, most people are overweight. In my opinion, that is just as much of an eating disorder as anorexia. It's just binging without the purging or anorexic cycling like I do. And it's just as unhealthy.

How Did You Quit Smoking?

According to the American Lung Association, In 2007, 19.8 million (17.4 percent) women smoked in the United States.

Below are some interesting facts about women and cigarettes from the American Lung Association.

  • Smoking is directly responsible for 80 percent of lung cancer deaths in women in the U.S. each year.
  • Female smokers are nearly 13 times more likely to die from COPD (emphysema and chronic bronchitis) compared to women who have never smoked.
  • Annually, cigarette smoking kills an estimated 173,940 women in the United States.
  • Postmenopausal women who smoke have lower bone density than women who never smoked.
  • Teenage girls often start to smoke to avoid weight gain and to identify themselves as independent and glamorous, which reflect images projected by tobacco ads.
  • In 2005, 10.7 percent of women smoked during pregnancy, down almost 42 percent from 1990. infants are more likely to develop colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases if secondhand smoke is present in the home or day care center. Maternal smoking has also been linked to asthma among infants and young children. The odds of developing asthma are twice as high among children whose mothers smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day.
  • Women who quit smoking greatly reduce their risk of developing smoking-related diseases and dying prematurely.
  • Women who quit smoking relapse for different reasons than men. Stress, weight control, and negative emotions, lead to relapse among women.
Are you a smoker? Did you quit smoking? I smoked cigarettes for about eight years. Quitting was not easy. In college I smoked while socializing with my friends at the bars and parties. Married life was stressful so I continued to rely on the nicotine to ease the stress for a few more years. One day I finally decided I was going to quit the habit and I haven't looked back since. I was fortunate enough to be able to quit cold turkey without any problems.

iVillage and ExpoTV have teamed up to solicit for tips on quitting and inspirational stories from real women who have kicked the habit. You can share your story and receive a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. Visit ExpoTV for complete details.

Prayer Chain Across the Blogosphere Week 29

Ma.gnolia DiggIt! Del.icio.us Yahoo Furl Technorati Reddit

I again would like to thank everyone for participating in the prayer chain. If you are new to this below you shall find what you can do to help spread the prayer chain and how you can add your prayers. I update the list every Sunday. Please help spread the prayer chain because I should be getting hundreds of new prayers every week. If you know anyone who is in need of prayers pleas add them to the list. If you have any updates on the prayers that are listed let me know by leaving a comment.

If you want to pass this prayer chain along on your blog all you need to do is add the prayer chain button and blog about this once a week. Ask your readers to post their prayer intentions as comments. Then you can either contact us with your prayer request, or post them as a comment on the prayer chain. You can also direct your readers here so they can post their prayer intentions directly to our site. If you intend to list prayers on your site please add your link so we can find those prayers.

I should have hundreds of comments from people that need prayers. I know they are out there. When you say your prayers at night, in the morning, or whenever you pray visit our chain and read the intentions. God is listening.

Here's the latest list.

The mother with the child with Asperger's and Asthma and her son.

For my health, the health of my unborn baby and all pregnant women and their unborn babies throughout the world.

Please pray for Baby Stellan. You can visit the link for current updates on how he and his mom are doing.

Prayers for Stellan

Update
Baby Stellan was released from Boston's Children's Hospital after undergoing successful surgery on his tiny heart. He and his mother are back home in the mid west. God answers our prayers!

Update 6/18/2009

UPDATE:

Hey, it's MckMama here. Thank you all so very much for your love and concern. We are doing as well as could be hoped, with the exception that sweet Stellan is suffering much from being in so much SVT over the past few days. Thankfully, after I fed him just now, he has finally fallen asleep for literally the first time today.

I will update here when I can, and am sending out a few Tweets here and there so you know specifically how to pray.

ORIGINAL POST:

Hi all, this is MckMama's sister, Hilary.

My sister ended up taking Stellan to the ER this afternoon. As I'm sure you know, Stellan has been having many break-throughs of SVT and performing vagel maneuvers just isn't going to suffice anymore for Stellan's long-term plan.

After a bit of trying, they were able to get an IV into Stellan's foot and successfully converted him by using adenosine. As per Dr. B's orders, they are admitting Stellan into the PICU and will further decide what to do from here. It seems as though some new combination of medicines will need to be tried to keep Stellan's SVT under control.

UPDATE: I just spoke with my sister on the phone (6:30pm central time) and Stellan has flipped back into SVT.

So please join me in praying for healing of Stellan's heart and for peace in the hearts of my sister and her family as they deal with this stressful situation.

Lord, wrap your arms around my sister and her family. Fill them with peace and trust as they travel through this "storm." You are our Comfort, our Shelter and our Healer. We beseech you, Lord, to interevene right now and cause Stellan's heart to beat in the rhythm it was meant to! Help us to keep our eyes focused on You. Amen.

Thank you all!
Blessings,
Hilary

"Hi Cascia. I'm the one who won the labor looks gown from your contest. Our baby was born on January 7th, and he is doing really well. But my labor and delivery did not go as planned or as we'd hoped, and I ended up with a partial 4th degree tear from an emergency forceps delivery, other wounds from 4 hours of intense pushing more than 36 hours after my water broke, and an infected abcess/hematoma in the same spot along the tear site. More than 3 weeks after my son's birth, several heavy-duty medications and 3 surgical procedures later, I am just now "out of the woods". But recovery is going to be very slow, and the emotional struggle is starting to get intense now that the physical struggles have lessened. In a week, my mom will be heading home, and I'll be on my own while my husband works. Normally, that would be okay, but with the unique issues from my complications, it is going to be hard. (I can't even sit or walk properly. And certain muscles in that area will need physiotherapy to get back to normal functioning.) Basically, I need healing of body and mind, as well as the ability to fully care for my son and somehow do household things that my husband cannot do with his schedule. (He does a ton and is the best, but his energy and time don't allow for taking care of my entire load.)

My other struggle right now is being able to see and feel all the zillions of positive and good things happening around me right now, and I seem stuck on the negative. I do see God's hand prints all over this situation, especially in the way my maternity doctor has cared for me both physically and spiritually, going above and beyond the normal role of medical physician. So there are many "Ebenezers" I see and cherish. But this journey is still hard, and sometimes finding Jesus beside me in all of this is not easy.

Thank you for praying."

Please Pray for the McCabe Family

This morning I received a text message from a nursery worker saying one of the families from our church lost there house do to a fire. The family happened to be one I have babysat for a couple of years. (Actually posted a picture of the kids a while back on here). I rode by the house minutes ago and the house is gone. Every room was destroyed, so I can image they lost everything. I feel so helpless and so heartbroken that they have to go through this. Please say a pray for them tonight and for the days ahead.

I'm pretty sure she is at 29 wks tomorrow! The last 2 wks she has been having a lot of contractions and is desperately trying to keep those babies in the oven longer! She has no cervix left so every day is a huge blessing! Please pray for her sanity, thru the ups and downs of this stage of the journey! Peace for her and her hubby. On Sunday evening, I learned that my Dad's brother-in-law, my Uncle Joe, had died. It was two months after he had a stroke (my cousin found her Dad on the floor when she came to pick him up for Sunday Mass). I put a prayer request for Uncle Joe and my cousins on the many social networks I participate in: Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Plaxo and Hi5. And ever since, I have been getting promises of prayer for Uncle Joe from all over the world.

Please Pray for Karli

I have been incredibly blessed in my life. I have a wonderful family, an incredible friend network, and so many other blessings. We have all been blessed with safety and good health, for the most part. In my life, I have known people who had cancer, but it was always an acquaintance, a friend's relative or a relative's friend. It has never been my relative or friend.

Yesterday that changed. Karli is a precious 3 1/2 year old little girl with big eyes and curly hair. Her parents, Chris and Beth, are very good friends of ours and we do many, many things together. The guys play softball while us wives and kids watch, we get together for game nights and scrapbooking and nights on the town and Bunco. They are our close friends. They are also our relatives. Chris and Andy are cousins. So besides doing things as friends, we also see each other for holidays and birthday parties and family celebrations. To say we spend a lot of time together is a bit of an understatement.

Karli woke up with a fever yesterday and Beth brought her into the doctor. After determining the cause of the fever was a bladder infection, the doc decided to check her blood to make sure the infection hadn't gone to her kidneys as well. That's when they discovered that her white blood cells and platelets were very low. A call to Children's Hospital soon had them on their way to the Twin Cities for further testing. Last night it was confirmed that she has leukemia and today they'll continue testing to determine what type and how advanced it is.

Please pray for sweet, active, funny little Karli, her parents Chris and Beth, her older sister Kaitlin and her younger brother Brett. They need all the prayers they can get and I know it will mean the world to them. Thank you.

Please pray for Aria

Pray For A FriendI would like to ask all those who read here to pray for a friend of mine who was seriously injured today. She fell down a long flight of concrete stairs and was helicopter-ed to a hospital. She is suffering from a cracked skull, brain hemoragging, and five broken ribs. She has two young girls and her 9 year old is actually the one who found her at the bottom of the stairs bleeding from both ears.

Please pray for my Dad
Hi friends, just a quick post with a request that any of you praying types out there please send up a few words on behalf of my Dad, Peter. He has been admitted this afternoon to hospital after being sick all week and having chest pains; tests have revealed he has had a minor heart attack.
I know they said minor, but to me, my siblings and especially my mum, this is major.

Our dad is an amazingly fit and healthy 63 year old guy. The thought of our dad laid up in hospital with a heart attack is inconceivable. Please pray especially for my mum. My dad is her best friend; I know she is freaking out right now. I am flying down to be with them first thing in the morning. Thanks in advance for your prayers. :)

We know that we serve a God who is a God of miraculous healing and mighty things. Please pray for her healing, as well as comfort for her girls and husband at this time.

God bless you all tonight... Hug your families a little extra.

Pray for Ashlyn
In 2007, Kennedy's friend Ashlyn (who happens to have Down syndrome) was battling Leukemia at the same time as Kenn was. Right after Kennedy finished treatment, we took a trip to Michigan where Ashlyn lives and got a chance to visit her in the hospital.
Ashlyn's mom, Nicki, and I compared notes through our journeys. We kept tabs on each other, prayed for each other and rejoiced as each of our children ended treatment. As we slowly edged further and further away from chemo we took comfort in longer breaks between hemonc visits, our daughters hair growing back and normal life resuming, but as is the case with most cancer moms, the dreaded "R" word - relapse - is never far from our minds.

Yesterday Nicki started living out our worst nightmare. Ashlyn has relapsed. Her Leukemia is back. She is back in the hospital and instead of enjoying their Summer, the McFadden family will spend their days helping Ashlyn fight. Again. I have NO doubt in my mind that she will win. Again.

Please please please pray for Ashlyn!!!! Please pray for her mom and dad and big brothers! Please click on the button above and visit her blog and let them know you're praying! Cancer SUCKS!!!!!!

Please Pray for Baby Number 5
Yes, we are expecting another baby - we're hoping that this baby will join our family in January. I am 10 weeks and we were actually planning on waiting awhile longer to share this happy news, but unfortunately circumstances that have developed are creating the need for much prayer. This baby's story actually starts back in February.

Most of you know that I was pregnant back then with baby #4. I went to see my doctor at the beginning of Feb. where they took my blood and confirmed the pregnancy and so forth. Then on February 22, baby #4 (whom we named Jeremiah) went to Heaven to be with Felicity. Read More

Pray for Wyatt

My nephew Wyatt was playing with matches and gasoline today, and caught his leg on fire. He has 3rd degree burns on one leg and 2nd degree burns on the other leg. He is being life flighted from West Yellowstone to the Burn Unit at the University of Hospital. I'm here waiting for him to arrive. Waiting is horrible. I've said my personal prayers, but I ask for as many prayers as we can get! Wyatt is such a special young man. We love him. I hate to think of him in pain or scared, and I especially hope his recovery will go as well as possible.

Thank you for your love and support!

Please pray for Marsha, Sasha, and the whole family Marsha is another adoptive mom here in Ukraine. I have directed you to her blog a few times and you have seen her heart. She is a mom that has made every child feel important at the orphanage. She brought something for the children every single day. She brought food or activities for them to play with. She brought a guitar and the children loved playing it and she would play and sing. She danced. She laughed. She hugged. She smiled. All the children loved Marsha. On her birthday, children brought drawings and crafts that they made for her. She broke down walls with the older teenage boys. She told them how much she loved them and how people in America are praying for them. Read More

This week was crazy here at the Talbert house. Monday had to have been my worst parenting day ever. I think I could write a whole article just about Monday. What started out to be a typical morning steadily got worse as the day progressed.

Courtney woke up with a sore throat and a fever of 103 so we had to keep her home from school. Monday was my first day returning to work and after organizing all my assignments I felt overwhelmed with the massive list. I was already stressing about how I was going to get them all done while taking care of four children on my own. It doesn't take much for me to get stressed out.

Mid-morning rolled around and I still didn't have a single article written so I kicked the two tots out the door. This was a big mistake. I checked on them about 30 minutes later and they had nearly completely emptied out the shed. Bags of potting soil, grass killer, and snail bait were scattered all over the lawn. The sharp gardening tools were also laying there in the grass. The whole yard was a complete mess. The kids stayed in the rest of the day.

Courtney's fever went down and by noon she said she was feeling a little better. I decided to take advantage of that and had her help me out with the kids so I could attempt once again to get some work done. She complained and sassed me the whole time. By 1pm I sent her to her room for the rest of the day.

The baby fussed all afternoon which left the dishes untouched and the clean laundry sat in the basket the whole day. Ciara decided to make messes all over the house and Conan copied her. By then I was angry and frustrated with my kids. I tried to ask Ciara nicely to clean up her messes but she still did not listen. I had to send her to her room at least a dozen times. Finally after yelling and numerous time outs she and Conan started cleaning up their messes. My chores did not get done.

At 7:30 that night I was sick and tired of dealing with cranky defiant kids so I sent them to bed. Ciara would not settle down. When I checked on her around 8:30 I was shocked at what I saw. Courtney left her backpack sitting on the floor at the foot of her bed. All of it's contents were spread out on Ciara's bed and Ciara was also sitting there with a pair of scissors in her hand and her pretty blond locks scattered all over the bed and floor. I was so upset that I screamed and then I cried.

Ciara butchered the hair in the front and on top. A couple of days later my sister-in-law who is a hairdresser tried to even it up a little but you can still tell that the haircut was done by a three year old. I know that almost every kid cuts their hair at one point but why did mine have to do this on a day that was already upsetting for me?

The rest of the week wasn't as bad. Although, I am still way behind on my work stuff. I know I'll get caught up, but in the meantime I might have some impatient advertisers. I apologize for that!

Now for the Weekend Unwind question for this week. Did anyone upset you this past week? If so what did that person do? Feel free to make your answer brief and don't forget to link up with MckLinky!

Why Crash Diets, Starvation and Stress are making you fat!

Many people have lost weight using some form of Atkins, or other extreme low-carb, diet. Rapid weight loss that involves high-fat, formerly forbidden foods may sound too good to be true. “You mean I can eat bacon, eggs, steak and hamburgers and lose weight, and all I have to do is leave off the bun?” It sounds too good to be true.

People will forever be looking for a magic potion. And yes, people initially lose weight on this diet and, for that matter, on most diets. But, weight loss has less to do with the food consumed during the diet and more to do with people becoming conscious of what and how much they are eating.

We lose weight when we burn more calories than we consume. Period. I remember when I used to read on-line reviews of Turbo Jam or Turbo Kick. There were always those who offered negative reviews because THEY hadn’t lost as much weight as they had hoped. In some cases, they had gained weight. Of course, anyone with common sense knows that there is no form of exercise that will make you gain weight. There is only one thing that will slow your weight loss or cause you to gain weight: EXCESS CALORIES.

Those who follow a strict diet plan—even one that doesn’t include calorie counting—will find they are limited in the amount of food choices available. This regimen results in a reduction of calories. The reduction of calories and sugar consumption results in weight loss. Deny yourself certain foods or create too great a deficit of calories and over time the weight is often regained.

The most commonly followed and least helpful diets:

THE HALF-DAY STARVATION DIET:
Another popular form of diet is what I call the “half-day starvation” diet. Those who follow this plan skip breakfast. They start their day with coffee or caffeine and make it past lunch with just a handful of grapes or half a bag of M&M’s. By late afternoon, the body senses a famine in the making, slips into a starvation protection mode, thus storing fat and slowing the calorie burn to accommodate the lack of nutrition coming in. Half-day starvation is a popular form of weight control that many women learn, and have some success with during their teens and early 20’s. As they gain weight and continue to resort to this torturous eating practice, they find it loses its effectiveness; and what used to facilitate weight loss now seems fruitless. The half-day starvation method is very common in overweight people, those who have high-stress jobs, and chronic dieters. By 3 pm, they can’t take it anymore. The hunger and fatigue are overwhelming. The only comfort seems to be large quantities of simple carbohydrates!

When questioned, they often explain, “I normally don’t eat all day until I’m home after work, or when the kids get out of school.” They describe feeling in control of their hunger until late afternoon, sometimes even forgetting that it’s lunch. By mid-afternoon, they feel run down, weak and suddenly famished. The hunger is so strong now it seems that only a simple carbohydrate snack will do the trick! Those who deny themselves meals or “planned food” make the following mistakes:

1. They consume high-fat, high-carbohydrate and unsatisfying snacks in greater quantities.
2. They find themselves in an “urgent” food situation by the time they’re ready to eat.
3. They often consume more “quick” unsatisfying snacks than the average person consumes well-balanced nutritional meals.
4. They activate the “starvation” switch, which tells the body to slow the metabolism and store fat.
5. They increase their evening hunger and create an inability to feel “satisfied” by a meal.

Ironically, those who go all day without a meal actually consume more calories than they know. What’s worse is that these are often the least satisfying, most damaging calories of all. Forced to account for every mindless calorie, many people on the half-day starvation plan will find they can consume up to a 1000 calories before ever having a “meal.” Here’s an actual example from a former client of mine who explained to me that she was “starving” all day and only ate one meal at night. Here’s her diary. It’s followed by an estimation of her calories. See if you can picture yourself in her shoes.

6:00 am Coffee with cream and sugar (2 big cups)
7:30 am Skipped breakfast, but I admit I ate 3 or 4 bites of my daughter’s leftover pancakes
8:30 am Ate a handful of peanut M&M’s at the receptionist’s desk while chatting with her
9:00 am Another cup of coffee with cream and sugar
11:00 am Chatted with receptionist again and, out of habit, I ate a few more M&M’s
12:00 pm Skipped lunch, not hungry yet; must be the M&M’s!
2:00 pm Now, I’m starving, but I’m tired and need caffeine! Picked up an iced mocha on the way to get the kids
2:30 pm Driving to soccer from school – ate Rachelle’s leftover goldfish from the lunch I packed her
3:00 pm Spent several hours at the soccer field with no food. I’m famished! All I can think about is dinner!
5:00 pm Back home and starving! Preparing dinner; ate a few handfuls of chips out of the bag to tide me over!
6:00 pm Finally, a meal! Healthy Dinner – Chicken breast, steamed vegetables, and water! Pretty good!
9:00 pm 3 cookies – just something sweet to watch my show with! I told you I’m bad at night!
10:00 pm Cocktail to unwind – (Just one. I needed it today!)
11:30 pm Not really hungry, but wanted something salty. Ate a few potato chips, then off to bed.

THE REAL STORY WITH CALORIES INCLUDED:
6:00 am Coffee w/ cream and sugar (2 big cups) 150 cals
7:30 am Bites of daughter’s pancakes – 100 cals
8:30 am Peanut M&M’s - 150 cals
9:00 am Coffee with cream and sugar – 75 cals
11:00 am More peanut M&M’s – 150 cals
12:00 pm Skipped lunch
2:00 pm Large iced mocha – 350 cals
2:30 pm Goldfish crackers – 100 cals
5:00 pm Chips while preparing dinner – 300 cals

At this point, she feels she’s been depriving herself of a meal all day. She’s unsatisfied and starving, hasn’t had a meal, yet she’s already consumed 1,400 empty calories and put her metabolism in slow motion.

6:00 pm 7 oz chicken breast, steamed veggies, brown rice and water! – 350 cals
9:00 pm 3 cookies – 250 cals
10:00 pm Cocktail – 200 cals
11:30 pm Chips– 150 cals

She goes to bed feeling as though she stuffed herself at the end of the night, starved herself all day, and to make matters worse, she consumed in excess of 2,300 calories and did no exercise! Not a lot of calories, unless she’s only burning 1800 a day, in which case she is on pace to gain a pound a week or more! The worst part about this is that she’s destroying her body’s ability to burn calories efficiently. She feels as though her efforts are for nothing. She’s frustrated, disappointed and living a tortured existence controlled by food and an ever-expanding waistline.

Starvation Protection Mechanism:
There are those who actually consume little to no calories for half of the day. They tough it out in the morning and afternoon and just stop eating. Yet, when we stop eating for more than three hours, science shows us the body literally flips a switch on that slows our basil metabolic rate. When the switch gets flipped on, the body activates the starvation protection mechanism (SPM). SPM is the result of thousands of years of human evolution meant to protect us from famine.

Our bodies are designed to store fat and burn muscle while in SPM mode. In this state, our bodies are ready to store fat, and often use muscle and other healthy fuel stores for energy. It is for this reason that Sumo wrestlers are encouraged to fast during the first portion of the day, train and then consume excessive amounts of calories. Are you training like a Sumo wrestler?

By eating every two-and-a-half to three hours, you lower your cortisol levels. Cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” and has been proven to be associated with stored belly fat, depression, insomnia and a weakened immune system. Those who eat healthily, and avoid going more than 3 hours without meals, can burn an increased number of calories even at rest and prevent muscle loss, which keeps the metabolism active. By eating small, well-balanced meals, you constantly ‘rev’ the metabolism!

But, the bottom line is that weight loss is a matter of calories in versus calories out. Eat or underestimate what you’re eating by more than 500 calories per day (a couple handfuls of chips), and you’ll be on track to gain 1 pound a week. How can we burn more but still enjoy eating effectively and with satisfaction on a more regular basis?

The simple answer:

Exercise more ---- Eat less.

That’s what you’ve been told. But, there’s far more to it.

The more complex answer:

Know what you’re burning so you know what you should/can consume to obtain your weight loss or weight maintenance goals. Do things that increase your body’s ability to burn calories, such as frequent small meals and strength training to build dense lean muscle tissue and cardiovascular activity to burn additional calories and maintain cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular activity should consist of 30 minutes or more of exercise 5 to 6 times a week with programs such as Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hustle or whatever program you will do and enjoy (I mean that!). Strength training should be performed 3 times a week with programs such as ChaLEAN Extreme or P90X.

Move more and you burn more. Build muscle and you create a muscle tissue which burns more calories at rest than fat. Eat frequently so you can keep your metabolism working and avoid SPM.

It’s not magic. It’s science. Here’s what eating every 2.5 to 3 hours will do for your body.

1. It turns off our SPM, or starvation protection mechanism
2. It allows the body to use stored fat—not muscle—for energy! That’s critical.
3. It lowers our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone that comes from not eating and putting your body in the stress mode with starvation. When you lower your cortisol, you reduce belly fat first.
4. You teach your body to constantly reset its metabolism. It is almost like a workout for the body every time you eat a balanced meal.
