Mums and Food !

What is it about mothers and food ? We were having a conversation today about how mothers often feel that they have to feed everyone all the time, whether they want to eat or not. Offering food is frequently an automatic response when people arrive at their homes.

When a woman becomes a mother she usually becomes the primary carer for her new-born baby. Many women feed their baby on demand, often as frequently as every two hours. Child and food often become completely connected in their minds.

Then as the child gets older, food treats can become the bribe for good behaviour, for eating their vegetables, for doing well. When their friends call to play the sign of being a good mother is to lavish them with lots of treats, cakes, biscuits, ice cream. It can become important to be recognised as the best mum, and that often includes food.

Many women these days offer choices to their children at meal times, or they ask in advance what they want to eat. Several of my friends regularly cook completely different meals for each member of their family. Fads, bizarre diets, likes and dislikes are all accommodated. They seem to regard it as a necessary part of being a good mum.

Many women enjoy cooking large meals and then spend a lot of time trying to encourage their family to eat it all. Even when they have been told by their children that they are not hungry I know of women who will still cook a large casserole and then try to entice and coerce their children to eat it up.

It is as if food, love, hospitality, caring and nurturing are all part of the same mindset. For many people and cultures, being a good host and providing extensive food and welcome to all comers is a spiritual as well as a moral and ethical family concept. This mindset seems to be replicated as mothers welcome their children home from school or work. They are returning home after a days adventures and therefore need to be fed.

Balance has got to be the key. Allowing children to dictate their diet and decide what to eat is a recipe for fussy, difficult children. It is important for children to learn about balanced meals, about a good and healthy diet, what food provides for them in the way of nutrition, development and growth. They also need to learn about good manners, and being able to eat a varied diet, to be able to eat what they are given in a polite and respectful way.

In these days of abundance and plenty many children are becoming obese, they are developing an unhealthy relationship with food and often eat far too much, often of the wrong foods. Learning to stay aware of their full and hungry signals is an important guide to eating the correct amounts of food, and then stopping eating. Leaving food when they have eaten sufficient should be okay. Becoming aware of what each child needs to eat can enable portion control to become incorporated when serving their food.

Waste is an interesting topic. For many people waste is a serious matter and is to be avoided at all costs. Some people may freeze uneaten food. Others decide to eat it themselves. Some people even admit to eating the uneaten food off their children's plates to avoid wasting it. Learning to appreciate how much a child eats and not over-facing them, allowing them to discover for themselves when and how much they need to eat to feel satisfied and full is an important skill to teach children as they learn to manage their own food intake and have a comfortable relationship with eating most food. This enables them to ultimately take better care of their own nutrition and health.

Noodle & Boo for Baby and Glowology for Mom

How nice is a skin care company that makes something as beautiful and gentle for baby take into consideration that maybe Mom needs something just as special?

From the creator of Noodle & Boo, Glowology bring moms a fine range of decadent body butters, after glow Gels and so much more.

Glowology's Opulent Body Butter is well..indeed opulent.
With key ingredients to help heal dry skin that hormones can throw at us amongst the many other things after child birth, it also is warmly comforting and soothing for the skin.
Calendula is soothing, Chamomile is comforting, Shea Butter protects the skin and aids moisture, Sweet Almond Oil leaves a silky feeling behind and lastly my favorite key ingredient is Vitamin E, it protects against UV induced free radicles and goes hand in hand with the other ingredients to reduce inflammation.

Glowology's Afterglow Gel is another treat for moms.
It's consistency is gel like so immediately you will feel the action work on tightening the skin.
I loved this after breast feeding to keep that area tight and skin healthy; something to consider after breast feeding.  Put this on before dressing to show off your ample decollete, your skin will glow in the sunlight and look ultimately healthy as the sun sets. I love gel based products for this part of the body, it gives the skin such a healthy glow.
Key ingredients are Algae which increases skin hydration and suppleness.
Oat Proteins improve over all elasticity and smooths fine lines(again great for the decollete where we have the lines from sun damage on our chest), Rice Extract are rich in phytosterols and polyphenols making it rich in antioxidants and lastly White Tea.  It STOPS SKIN FROM SAGGING, specifically because it provides protein for the synthesis of collagen and when there's collagen, there's elastin, they go hand in hand when it comes to the break down of collagen causing our skin to sag.

Are you ready to whip out your credit card yet?  I am, amply bosom here I come to save you!

If you love to use a bar soap for baby's delicate skin I have the soap for you.
All of My Heart French Milled soap is made of pure 100% vegetable oil base that does not contain any dehydrating detergents or irritating surfactants.
It soothes sensitive skin with oatmeal and aloe.  Wholesome, yummy oatmeal and aloe carefully sooth while Sweet Almond Oil and nutrient rich milk proteins moisturize the skin.
When trying out new skin care for myself and baby I love buying trial sizes and the Essential Care Kit is just the thing to get a feel for such a great line.
It comes with a Super Soft Lotion, Extra Gentle Shampoo and Soothing Body Wash.
It smells like a delcious little baby, soft and gentle and powdery yummy!

Green Your Weekend!

Green Fact: Avoiding 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year! http://www.climatecrisis.net/

And guess what? The average driver drives less than two miles on most trips! By modifying some of these short distance driving adventures, we can really do our part in the reduction of harmful emissions. Just think of the amazing difference this could have if we all changed some of our driving habits.

It can be difficult when we are in a hurry, or we have the mind-set that "it's just around the corner" but the just-around the corner drive can not only add to the destruction of our environment but it is one act that can be reduced, if not eliminated with just a little planning and perseverance.

Well lovely greenies, there are some oldies but goodies that can really make a difference in the health of our planet as well as our family! Try some of these options this weekend ~

1. Plan! We can plan out our trips each week by scheduling one day of the week for scouting around. By making a list at the beginning of the week of the those pesky little things that need to get done, we can eliminate the need for surprise outings. Plan errands, appointments and outings to be all in one day. If you are anything like me, one errand turns into three and by planning out what needs to be done, we can effectively navigate to save on gas and carbon poo. (I know, gross right? Poo...that word makes me giggle!)

2. I got wheels! We don't no stinkin mini-van ;) We got other wheels that are just as sassy - bicycles and rollerblades are not just for those fortunate souls from L.A. who live each day near the beautiful sunny oceanside and palms tree (jealous sigh). We too have the capability to bike around and slap on those blades and get to where we need to be. It is great exercise for starters and it can also become great quality time with the family if you do it together. Living by example is a wonderful way to encourage a healthy lifestyle for the next generation.

3. Walking it: The benefits of walking are enormous for our personal health, and it is the oldest way of getting around! Take advantage of those legs and get some good fitness in while walking to your destination. Kids can go in a stroller, ride their bikes while you walk or join you if it's close enough that their itty-bitty legs won't give out. It can be done!

4. Don't go! Many of us have a difficult time with the word "no" and with this pleasing attitude, we tend to go out of our way to take care of things that maybe our inner spirit really doesn't want to do. Next time you are considering an activity, ask yourself "is this necessary and do I really need and want to do this?" Too often, we allow ourselves to be sucked into things that we really do not want to do, but feel that we should in order to please others. By saying no to an unnecessary outing, you are reducing the carbon dioxide while staying true to who you are and want to be. If saying no is a challenge, just make it known that you are doing your part in saving our planet....so "sorry Charlie that we won't be accepting your invite - we must do our part for Earth" (hehehe). Well, it's the truth, right?

Greening your weekend can be fun and easy with just a few little tweeks to your typical routine - and can really make quite a difference for a healthier more sustainable lifestyle for your whole family!

Here's to a happy, healthy, relaxing GREEN weekend!

Why It Seems Like I Have Been MIA

Posted by Cascia Talbert at Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Ma.gnolia DiggIt! Del.icio.us Yahoo Furl Technorati Reddit

I hope everyone is having a fun and enjoyable summer. My summer has been extremely busy, stressful and full of surprises. (Conan's Birthday and the Chicken)

It has been a long time since I visited my favorite blogs, posted to the popular message boards, and sent out friendly e mails to my blogging buddies. I am writing this to let all of my blogging friends know that I am still here I just have had a lot of things happen in my personal life, and am busy setting up our new sister site and that is why I just don't have the time to visit your blogs like I used to.

I feel so terrible about this and hope that in a few months things will get back to normal and I will again find the time every day to read and comment on my favorite blogs.

I will explain a little more in detail as to what I have been up to. First of all as a blogger we all know that if we are doing this to earn a little extra money to support our family we need to link it to another business related to our blog. This is why I created The Healthy Moms Online.

On this new site you will find health and wellness products at affordable prices designed for busy moms. I don't have a lot of HTML knowledge nor a massive budget so I created this website all on my own. I've spent several hours this summer loading products into my shopping cart software and tweaking the site with a lack of HTML skills. I am asking you to please visit this site and let me know what you think.

Currently I only have natural herbal and homeopathic remedies from Native Remedies on there and affordable fitness equipment. If I can get some sales from this site I will be able to afford other products like, Beach Body fitness equipment, natural cosmetics, and aromatherapy. If you would like to see us expand our product line, please drop by, support our site by making a small purchase or share the link with your friends who may be interested. I need to make some sales in order for all the time and effort I put into it to be worth it.

The other reason why I haven't been able to visit your websites is due to stress related to personal and family issues in my life. My marriage is doing to well and hasn't been for some time. It is mostly due to communication issues but these problems have caused a lot of pain and hurt on both ends. Please pray for my marriage. I don't know what is going to happen, but I do know that he is a wonderful father and I made a vow with God to stay with him for life.

Another stress that is weighing me down is that my husband is trying to get a promotion at work but has had a very difficult time with it. If you have been following my articles you will know that we live in a very bad part of Sacramento. Crime is pretty high around here, there are gang activities just down the street and drug busts are a regular occurrence in our neighborhood. Our next door neighbor in fact was arrested recently for what we think was drug related. It took me a long time to overcome my fear of going for a walk around the neighborhood without my husband. Needless to say, we keep to ourselves and don't know the neighbors very well.

Also, I have four children and we live in a tiny 900 square foot home. Most of our belongings are stuffed in boxes in our garage and toys are scattered all over the house. I have anxiety and am closterphobic so living this way is not helping my mental health.

My husband really wants to move out of this tiny house and into a safer neighborhood but we just can not afford it yet. That is why he is trying to get a promotion at work. He applied for several jobs east of the Mississippi River, which is where I would like to live, but he didn't get any of them. There is one other job that he applied to up in Washington State but he is still waiting to find out if he got it or not. We were hoping to move out of California before the school year started but now it looks like that is not going to happen.

Now that Conan is old enough for preschool we decided we can no longer send our kids to the Catholic school. It will be way too expensive to send three kids there. My only choice is to send my oldest who will be starting eighth grade this fall to the local public middle school. She is terrified to go there because she hasn't ever attended a public school and the middle school down the street is not only a public school but the typical inner city school.

My parents have offered to help pay for tuition if I can get her back into the Catholic school but with the start of the school year only weeks away I am worried that it may be too late. Also if I do that I will need to find a different preschool for Conan and Ciara, probably one that isn't free and it has to be close to the Catholic school. I will also have to deal with traffic in the mornings again, which I hate. But I will do anything for my kids.

I thought about homeschooling but with my low patience level and lack of knowledge on how to begin I don't know if that is possible either. If any of you home school your kids out here in California please e mail me (talbertcascia at yahoo dot com) with tips on how to begin and how much it costs. I need something. Besides it will only be temporary. Once we move I will be able to send my kids to better schools.

So I am apoligizing for not visiting your blogs regularly. I hope you all understand. When everything settles back down I will be able to read and comment every day again. Please keep me in your prayers.
